Welcome to Coulee Region Woodturners

Club Mission
Our mission is to provide education and information to those who are interested in woodturning. We define woodturning as the shaping of wood using a lathe, which results in objects and images that range from the familiar to the profound. This includes everything from decorative and functional bowls, boxes, and vessels, to furniture, architectural spindles, toys, tools, musical instruments, and sculptural objects.

Club Meets

The Coulee Region Woodturners (CRW) organization meets in Onalaska, Wisconsin, which located in the coulee region of Western Wisconsin. Onalaska overlooks Lake Onalaska, an extension of the Mississippi River. Members of the club come from Western Wisconsin, Southeast Minnesota and Northeast Iowa.

Our monthly club meetings are currently held at the Onalaska Luther High School's Woodshop. The club owns several lathes and assorted turning tools. Our meetings use AV equipment to augment the turning demonstrations. Demonstrations are conducted by local turners and other gifted turners including professionals to share their turning skills on a variety of turned objects and woodturning topics.

Community Engagement
The club is engaged in a variety of civic engagement opportunities, including turning demonstrations at local art fairs, county fairs, workshops at schools, other events and making Wig Stands for Cancer Survivors.

Coulee Region Woodturners Wig Stand Project

One pet community engagement project of the club is Wig Stands; designed and turned by members. The completed stands are donated to local cancer centers, which in turn hand them out to patients at no charge. Most of the viewers know of someone with cancer, so we want to honor these folks and let them know we support their struggle. Various woods are used including cherry, oak, maple, hickory, pine and many others.

As of June 2026, 291 wig stands have been donated to the Gundersen Clinic Cancer Center emplify_cr_partner_wig_stands.PNG  or other local healthcare centers.
