Vacuum chucking systems for woodturners.
Vacuum chucking is method of holding timber to the lathe's headstock end with the use of vacuum. It is very helpful when finishing the bottom of a live edge bowl for instance. There are many other uses on the lathe. A word of caution when using vacuum to hold a piece, NEVER turn the headstock motor at fast rpms, probably no greater than 600-700 maybe less. For, if that piece comes off due to the vacuum failing (power outage, poor seal, etc.) at a high speed, severe injury could result.

A word of caution when using vacuum, selecting too much vacuum can crush or destroy a thin piece of timber on the chuck.
One can always start out with lower pressure and build up as needed to secure the piece to the chuck.
Always, recommend wearing a full-face shield when using vacuum chucking on spinning timber.
An inexpensive vacuum system is described below. There are many systems available through the major woodturning vendors, or search thru the following information, and use your creativity to make your own.
