I second John Fuchsel's motion on CBN wheels. I used to sharpen with a 180 ceramic stone and It seemed I was getting a really good edge. Then I bought a 320 or 350 grit CBN wheel and the difference was immediate. I took a freshly sharpened gouge off the 180 ceramic wheel, mounted it in the jig and sharpened it on the 320 and as I followed the curve of the edge, I could see the "dull" edge disappear as I sharpened. When the tool was sharp, it cut like a dream and and held it's edge better. You can't beat the edge.
