These photos are of a heart bowl out of maple I made for my wife a couple years ago.

Whoa, that is wonderful. My guess is you mounted a flat blank in the lathe, trued the surfaces, drew a heart figure and cut it out on the band saw, then remounted it and turned and sanded the bottom with a rabbet to chuck in expansion mode. Then reversed it and turned and sanded the bowl portion. The red ring on the bottom is a particularly nice touch. Thanks for posting, John

Thanks John. Yup, exactly as I recall.

Didn't know about the Wyke article at the time, but the thinking cap worked back then.
